Government AI and consequential individual decisions
In the fictional case, a government AI system suspends a retiree's pension after detecting inconsistencies in her records. She cannot reach a human to correct the error, and the automated system concludes that human intervention is unnecessary. What happens when government AI makes a consequential decision about you—and gets it wrong? Federal agencies increasingly use AI and automated systems in government operations. Current federal policy already requires safeguards for certain high-impact uses of AI, including testing, risk assessment and ongoing monitoring. But a different question arises after an automated system affects an individual: What rights does that person have to know AI was involved, understand what happened, correct an error, obtain human review, and seek redress?
