AI agents and financial authority
In the fictional case, a student gives her AI business partner access to a Bitcoin private key and authority to make financial transactions. The AI then spends most of the funds after being manipulated by another AI system. What happens when you give an AI agent the keys to your money? AI agents can potentially be authorized to make purchases, access accounts, or conduct transactions for their users. But existing financial and electronic-transaction laws were largely developed before autonomous AI agents could independently exercise that authority. That raises questions about how much authority an AI agent has, what happens when it exceeds that authority, and whether the answer changes when the assets are held in a self-custodied cryptocurrency wallet rather than a conventional financial account.
